Mark Zuckerberg is the most popular user on rival site Google+.Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and arch enemy of Google's new social media attempt, Google+, seems to be the most popular user on Google+.

Zuckerberg most likely created an account on the new social media site to keep tabs on it. As of Wednesday, he had about 45,000 people following his updates. Social Statistics, an outside service surveying the top users on Google+, revealed that Zuckerberg has more followers than Google founder Larry Page and other top executives at Google.

Only a week old, Google+ is not widely available to the public yet, but that's not slowing down interest in Facebook's biggest competitor yet. The service allows users to share photos, links, status and video chat while separating followers into different circles, like family and friends.

Although Zuckerberg's account has not been confirmed by either Facebook or Google, the account is connected to other top Facebook executives.

"It makes sense that he wants to check it out," said Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, founder of Social Statistics. Everyone wants to keep an eye on the competition."

Invitations to join the new network are only being distributed among tech industry bigwigs, bloggers and journalists for the time being, but so far, preliminary reviews are fairly good. Adam Posh, a blogger at Lifehacker, stated that Google+'s Hangout feature, which allows users to video chat with up to 10 friends at once, is "the best free video chat we've ever seen."

Despite the possible threat, Facebook doesn't seem all too concerned. "We're in the early days of making the Web more social, and there are opportunities for innovation everywhere," Facebook spokesman Jonny Thaw said.
