Sticker shock: AT&T has agreed to waive charges for a U.S. soldier who racked up a $16,000 cell phone bill.Like many U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan, Pfc. Jose Rivera tries to stay connected with his family as much as possible. But thanks to a misunderstanding about international call rates, Rivera quickly racked up a $16,000 cell phone bill -- which AT&T has now agreed to waive after learning of the situation.

Rivera's wife recently gave birth to a baby girl and is now being treated for heart trouble, so he has called home regularly since arriving in Afghanistan in July. That led to the $16,000 bill. According to CNET, Rivera says AT&T told him a $4.95 per month add-on would enable him to make international calls to his family. What he wasn't told, he says, is that calls would be $5 a minute and 50 cents per text message.

His commanding officer, Capt. Evan Brainerd, decided to take charge of the situation and fight the bill on Rivera's behalf.

"While he should have realized that $4.95 a month was probably too good to be true, he is a young soldier with minimal experience with phone plans or overseas travel," Brainerd said. He acknowledges that Rivera isn't "blameless" in the situation and should have to pay for his calls, but adds that "$16,000 -- every penny that this soldier and his family can hope to save during the course of this one-year deployment -- is a gross injustice."

After reports of the case began to surface, AT&T has decided to waive the $16,000 phone charges. "We are crediting the family's entire bill," an AT&T spokesperson told CNET.
