More than 50 million animals are killed each year in the name of fashion -- and shoppers do not always know which garments are made with real fur versus faux fur. But a new bill, which passed the Senate this week and now heads to President Obama's desk, will require clothing makers to disclose all uses of fur.On Tuesday, the Senate passed the Truth in Fur Act, calling for stricter labeling on fur items (it passed the House in July). Under current law, which dates back to the 1950s, the use of fur does not need to be disclosed if the article is valued at $150 or less -- which exempts 13 percent of fur items sold in the United States. If signed into law, the Truth in Fur Act will require designers to label all real fur.
According to Michael Markarian, COO of the Humane Society of the United States, investigations by his organization found that many retailers and designers sell apparel adorned with real animal fur that is either unlabeled or falsely advertised as "faux fur" because of the increasing stigma associated with buying real fur. And the $150 cut-off is rather lenient. Markarian contends a coat could have a collar or cuffs adorned with fur "from 30 rabbits ($5 each), nine chinchillas ($16 each), three foxes ($50 each) or three raccoon dogs ($45 each)" -- and therefore not require a label.
While compliance may pose a new challenge for companies in the clothing world, Markarian said he is "pleased" that the new law requires the full disclosure that his and other organizations have been hoping for to protect both animals and consumers.

It just kills me how some people act like it's a bad thing to be compassionate. When did that become a bad thing?????? Tony, why does it bother you so much that someone cares about animals (and trees and rainbows---your words). Isn't this how it should be?
Many people don't know the dark story about real fur.
They come from the cruelest people on Earth, yes trappers.
Many of them whack and stomp the animals to death to maximize pelt value.
They have ZERO animal welfare.
They are all for the money and don't give a ratcrap about animals.
They keep saying this stupid slogan "God put animals on Earth for our use" (abuse).
I did research and many trappers are very Christian, Christianity is very anthropocentric and they say animals have no soul.
I don't believe in soul nor hell nor heaven and nor god.
But is an offense to nature. Treating animals like resource or things.
If you eat meat for survival then is another thing.
Most trappers skin animal and toss away the carcasses.
Few of them will eat all.
Also trappers are very hypocrite and corrupted.
They claim to be environmentalist which aren't because.
1. They insult environment.
2, They bash against vegan and vegetarians.
3, They drive cars, but more than the normal person. Wasting a lot of gasoline to check their set.
4, Real fur uses a LOT more energy than faux fur and they put toxic chemicals to preserve it from rotting. The thing they say they put borax, salt and harmless stuff is TEMPORALLY so it doesn't rot when they ship it to tanners where the tannerie puts the real toxic chemicals.
5, Trappers are no better, they are hypocrite they cry about real fur made from oil but they use plastic, PVC for their set, waxing traps which is petroleum products, Many trappers do NOT wear fur. I have checked their picture gallery of them putting set they wear nylon and other man-made coats just like us. Some even work in OIL company. Most of them are right wing which oppose the off-shore drilling ban even after the BP spill.
6, They claim to care about the environment which is FALSE. They are right wing and right wing are oil-lovers, they care about money more than human life. They prioritize money before the environment. Money is replacable but life ISN'T.
Those inbred hicks right wing live in a trailer home and they don't give a crap about our well being they don't give free healthcare. If you get cancer, diabetes and other disease is your fault. Human life has more value than money. In the republican terms Money has more value than everything including money.
7, Population control thing is a myth and pure BS. Majority of animal trappers trap are HEALTHY and rarely sick. Manged animal have little to no value and sick animals are too disoriented to get baited. Traps are not selective and it causes preventable death to non-targets animals and including pets. Trappers truly don't give a crap about nature, nor the environment.
8, They value trapping more than everything. If you hate trapping they hate you and calls you uneducated even calls the neutral (undecided) people uneducated.
Besides trapping is a cult and is religious based not science base. Their forums are soo religiously ridden.
I have no problem if people are religious as long it doesn't cause harm to others, financial exploitation
or use to harm other living beings or discriminating other religion believers.
Many of them bash against Atheist, Non-Christian and calls Veganism a cult.
I come from a family of hunters. We eat what we kill therefore, if the pelts can also be used then we use them. However, killing just to kill for the sake of fashion is not within our code of killing animals.
