The Food Network's first-ever Great Food Truck Race came to a close on Sunday, and rock 'n roll burger-flippers Grill Em All were crowned the winners.Seven food trucks, including Austin Daily Press, Crepes Bonaparte, Nana Queens, Nom Nom Truck, Ragin' Cajun, and Spencer on the Go, competed for six weeks. The trucks droves from Los Angeles to New York, making pit stops in San Diego, Santa Fe, N.M., Fort Worth, Texas, New Orleans and Jonesborough, Tenn.
"There were food challenges every week, but every episode comes down to the team that sells the most and makes the most capital," Grill Em All co-founder Matt Chernus said following the competition. "You're allowed to mash up your menu to appeal to the locals, but we're pretty adamant about being a burger joint."
In the final episode, the Nom Nom Truck and Grill Em All had to hit a revenue quota in each of New York's five boroughs before racing to the top of the Flatiron Building to meet host Tyler Florence and cross the finish line. Chernus and his partner Ryan Harkins -- Cleveland natives who set up shop in Los Angeles in November 2009 -- won $50,000 in their narrow defeat of Nom Nom Truck. (But the competition is friendly -- Grill Em All and Nom Nom Truck celebrated the finale together in Hollywood.)
In an earlier interview with AOL Small Business, Chernus laid out Grill Em All's future plans, noting that he hopes the show will be a catalyst for something bigger.
"We're still eying a gastropub where you can grab a beer and watch the [Cleveland] Browns," he said. "Another LA truck is definitely a possibility -- as it is, we've had to cancel gigs because we're already booked."
Well, thanks to The Food Network, they now have $50,000 in capital to get that started.
