How to Get the Most Out of Your iPad

Apple's supertablet can't do it all, but with the right apps, it comes pretty close. A look at some of the best for work, play and everything in between.

There's an app for that: How to supercharge your iPad.Not every app looks good on the iPad. Warmed-over iPhone apps can appear pixelated and rough when you expand them to fill the 9.7-inch tablet's screen. Now that the iPad has been out for nearly six months, app developers have gotten a running start and are rolling out apps that both look lovely and embrace the tablet format.

App: OmniFocus
Maker: The Omni Group
Price: $39.99

OmniFocus justifies its price tag with some seriously heavy duty task-management features. This goes way beyond a to-do list. The star of this app is the Forecast feature. Look ahead to what's coming down the line over the next seven days and get a grip on all your to-dos, projects and deadlines. Break it down by the day and figure out when you've got a few extra minutes to breathe and when you can expect to go full tilt boogie. The sync feature keeps your tasks together between your iPad, Mac, iPhone or iPod Touch. It has a clean and attractive interface and makes the most of the extra iPad screen room.
Maker: Instapaper
Price: $4.99

Not every iPad is hooked up to AT&T's 3G network. If you're just on Wi-Fi, then your iPad isn't going to be connected everywhere you go. Expand the experience with Instapaper Pro. This app lets you save Web pages for later enjoyment, even when you're not online. It's a no-frills approach with a text focus, but it works. This is a universal app, which means it'll automatically adjust itself to match your iPhone or your iPad, depending on which device you're using -- a handy feature for users with both gadgets. Look for the little plus sign next to the app in the App Store to identify universal apps.

App: iWork
Maker: Apple
Price: $9.99 per app

You might not dream of crunching spreadsheets or writing up a ton of content on your iPhone, but the iPad makes the prospect a whole lot more tempting. Unlike most app developers, Apple got a head start in creating the iWork office suite for the iPad. iWork is available in three individual components: Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations. Invest in a keyboard dock to make it easier on your fingers.
Maker: Kayak
Price: Free

Video chat and virtual conferences haven't wiped out the need for business travel. Get a grip on booking your flights with this application from travel search aggregator Kayak. All of Kayak's powerful search capabilities are on tap in an app designed to stretch itself out across the whole iPad screen. The app used to be known as Kayak Flights, but a notable new feature named Explore brought about a name change. Explore gives flight suggestions based on variables, like how much money you have to spend, climate preferences and what you want to do on the other end. That might not be so handy for arranging a business trip, but it opens up some fun options for vacation getaways.

App: Digital Magazines
Maker: Various
Price: Free and up

This isn't just a single app -- it's a genre. Digital magazines are the iPad versions of familiar physical publications. Many bring a level of interactivity that you will never get out of a stack of glossy paper. Click on videos, connect to relevant websites and enjoy stunning graphics on your big tablet screen. Popular Mechanics Interactive Edition ($1.99) is a good example of the digital magazine done right. The first issue, which debuted in July, features a rotating 3D project display, building sequence animations and an earthquake map that updates with the latest ground shaking activity.
