My grandfather was a plumber during the depression, and my grandmother was a businesswoman in real estate and junking. But, neither one of my parents were in business, and I am the only business person in my family right now. I do believe someone has to find the motivation, which can be hard to find when people are programmed to strive for a corporate life. There are also skills that can be learned. As far as personal traits, a person needs resourcefulness and the capacity for risk, in addition to creativity, and that get up and go. One has to commit to the business, which takes courage and motivation. One also needs a product to market, and a market for your product. It also takes a lot of luck--good luck.
First Born tend to be more likely to own their own business. Also your personality plays a big part. It's a Risk and if you do not enjoy Risks you aill not be happy. Owning a start up means you are not going to make money right away and if you stress over not having a pay check on Friday it just might be too much for you.
I manufactured my first item when I was about nine. My next item was better made and sold even more when I was 10, by 13 I saw that I should make money for myself. Only hate work when I was working for someone else I was making money for. Most employees I have had fit into 2 groups the ones who were looking to me for a paycheck and the others who want me to teach them how to be my competitor...Some people say ...try...most people say...better not..you could fail...they will fail
It runs in my family!

There are alot of entrepeneurs on my father's side of the family. He was always a sole proprieter of a graphics art studio. I owned a PI agency for 10 years, and now self-employed as an e-tailer. Some of my children have side businesses and so do many of my cousins. I think we have inherited the tendency.
It is an acquired skill. www.WealthBuildersNY.com
I started 2 businesses and ran them successfully, even though my background was in teaching (English/Journalism major). I think I have a much higher ability to both assess and take risk than many people, and I had the example of one parent (my father) who founded a small bank in 1941. I also had a mentor who kept saying, "You could start a business." As it turns out, I could (and did) start not one but two successful businesses, one in 1987 (Sylvan Learning Center #3301) and one in 1995 (Prometric Testing Center).
At 22, right after college, I started my business and have been selling roses for 25 years. After trying to put many people in business and watching the economy, it takes a certain type of person to have the skills necessary to stay in business. This is nature, I surmise.
However, people can be taught to perform tasks that will make them money, as evidenced by owning a franchise business or learning from cd's or self help books, which are created by entreprenuers.
Washington seems to think that they are imported!!
Even as a child I was painting rocks, making lemonade, or selling worms for fishing bait all for sale. In my 65 years I have always been a business owner from a dairy farmer, florist, clothing store, photographer and interior decorator. The last 9 years my husband and I started and have been running a business Serving Online Seniors (a computer repair business) successfully. We invited 2 of our children to join us and work towards owning the business. Only one of our children still remains the other was too worried about his next pay check. Entrepeneurs are special and have to be born with that driven force needed to work hard to succeed. My husband and I are looking forward to the next business we can start, life is just to short to waste even a minute!!
First we're born, then we're made. I think life experiences trigger us to want to serve better and make a difference through their own ideas and strengths.
I come from self made men and women. All of which received little to no start up help. Hard work, long hours, the ability to be comfortable with risk, and laying it all on the line, was something we were raised with. I have one company that is out of it's 'start up' phase and doing well and another that I've just started. I should add that all of these businesses are family owned and run.
