In an effort to recognize entrepreneurs' contributions to the nation, the co-founders of Grasshopper.com have started a public petition to create an official National Entrepreneurs' Day.

The online petition is addressed to President Obama, asking him to make March 20, 2011, the first National Entrepreneurs' Day, akin to Mother's Day and Father's Day. While Global Entrepreneurship Week and World Entrepreneurship Day already exist, founders Siamak Taghaddos and David Hauser point out that there is currently no day recognizing U.S. entrepreneurs.

"The more research I did, the more it confirmed my suspicion: America, the most entrepreneurial country in the world, didn't have a National Entrepreneurs' Day," Taghaddos wrote in a blog post announcing the petition.

Taghaddos and Hauser, whose Grasshopper.com sells a virtual phone system for entrepreneurs, do not expect the country to make it a holiday where people take off work, but they hope the day will serve to honor entrepreneurs for the hard work they do.

As of May 13, nearly 1,000 people had signed the petition.
